Field Command Post, 12 December 1942.

I have just had my most exciting day since Himmler became my patient. He was very nervous and restless, and I could tell he had something on his mind. When I spoke to him about it he responded by asking: ‘Could you treat a man who is suffering from severe head-aches, attacks of giddiness and insomnia? Here, read this. It’s the secret file on the Führer’s illness.’ The report ran to 26 pages, as I ascertained when I first leafed through it. It was obvious that they had used the hospital report dating from the time when he lay blinded in the hospital at Pasewalk. Proceeding from this period, the reports stated that as a young combat soldier Hitler had succumbed to a poison-gas attack. He had been inefficiently treated, with the result that a danger of temporary blindness arose. Symptoms of a syphilitic infection also manifested themselves. He was treated at Pasewalk and discharged as cured. In 1937 symptoms appeared which implied that the syphilitic infection was continuing its sinister work of destruction. In early 1942 the appearance of further such symptoms left no doubt that Hitler was suffering from progressive paralysis, all the symptoms being present with the exception of pupillary fixity and blurred speech. I returned the report to Himmler and told him that I was afraid I could not do anything in this case because I was a specialist in manual therapy, not mental disorders.
